For our Millinocket Maine wedding we rented a local hall that was less than beautiful --until my mother and sisters did their magic! They bought a picket fencing on sale, painted it white, and my father put “feet” on it so it would stand up behind the head table. They spray painted bare tree branches white, strung white lights on them and tied them to the fencing.

We also strung white icicle lights all around the room (we scrounged them from everyone we knew) but put taped paper hearts at the bottom of each strand, so it looked romantic, not Christmassy. For the table centerpieces, we put scented tea lights on mirrors with daisy heads. It looked positively magical!

When it was time for Jason and me to come into the reception, my best friend had bought a long carpet runner that was mostly red and unrolled it for us. She had heard me say I wanted one for our stairs, so she made sure it was long enough to fit our stairs. That was our wedding present from her!

Instead of buying those little weights to hold down our balloons, we filled zip lock bags with rice. Then we wrapped those bags in shiny wrapping paper and tied all at the top. My husband is totally anal. He actually measured out the rice to three cups per bag so we could save it and cook it later. Scary, I know.

I hated the whole wedding planning process. The best thing we did, in my opinion, was to make Friday nights a wedding free zone. No talking about the wedding allowed. My wife really did a great job, in spite of my pissy attitude. I told her she should put planning a wedding on her resume. It is a freaking huge undertaking. But if it’s what I had to do to have Karyn for the rest of my life, I can’t complain.

I just read Josh’s post. What an attitude! My husband David had a blast planning our wedding. He’s a man’s man, but he was showing his metro-sexual side this summer. (When he and I had a big fight about our theme colors, I realized I didn’t know him as well as I thought!) I guess I don’t have a creative wedding tip, except to say stop being so sexist. Some guys have the wedding gene, girls. If you let them actually make some decisions, that is.
