Q & A with Katie Baker

Katie Baker has been working hard to turn her part-time passion into a full-time job, but she's finally done it! We have a feeling 2012 is going to be a great year for Kate Baker Photography...
How did you get started in photography?
Like any photographer, its always been an interest. Shortly after I got married and moved to Maine, photography became a bigger part of my life. Dear friends of mine from Minnesota were planning their wedding and they asked if I would fly home to document their big day. In 2006, my husband, Jason, pushed me to start a business and pursue this dream.
What do you love about wedding photography?
Every wedding, every couple, and every family are unique and have their own story to tell. I love watching the day unfold and capturing the wide range of emotions to be had on such an occasion. I always imagine future generations looking at the pictures, and I want them to feel every aspect of the story.

What is the biggest challenge you face when shooting a wedding?
Timing. I always work closely with my clients to create a timeline that gives us enough time for the images that they want, but it’s a wedding day and things happen! It’s always helpful when a bride and groom decide to see each other before they walk down the aisle—then we have lots of time and less stress to capture their fun creative portraits.
What should clients know about your style of photography?
I work hard on getting to know my clients before the big day, so that they are comfortable with me and with my camera. The result is very natural images, reflecting the couples’ love for one another. I document the day as it happens naturally; mostly with candid images, only giving direction when it’s needed. Most clients remark that I felt like their friend and not just their photographer—I love that.

When you're not behind the camera, what do you like to do?
I love spending time with my husband, Jason, and our friends and family. You can often find us at a beach, walking around the Old Port, or taste-testing at a brewery. In the winter months, I love to snuggle up with my cats and a good book!
How can the couple help YOU on their wedding day?
Just relax and have fun. Don’t worry about the small things—just focus on the fact that you are marrying your best friend and, in the end, that really is all that matters. When couples start the day with this kind of attitude, it sets the tone for everyone else around them, too.

What sorts of things inspire you when you pick up your camera?
I know it sounds cheesy but seeing people in love inspires me. I just want to document it so they will always remember how they felt about the other person in that moment. I’m also a country girl at heart, so seeing a field with golden light gets me every time. I usually think, “Wow, I would love to photograph a couple in that field right now!”
Where will your business be in the next 5 years?
I am so happy with where my business is currently at, especially with the recent release of our new logo/brand this. I can only hope that we are able to continue in the direction that we are heading. Jason and I do have plans to build a studio where our current garage is, so stay tuned for news on that.
