Q & A with Shane Corcoran
When Shane Corcoran photographed his cousin's wedding 10 years ago, his photography business chnaged. The honor he felt capturing someone's wedding day turned him on to wedding photography for life. Shane's Wedding Photography is based in York, Maine, and continues to grow.
How did you get started in photography?
I began getting into photography in high school so I could document my art portfolio in order to get into art school. I earned a BFA from California Institute of the Arts with a degree in experimental animation & film.
What do you love about wedding photography?
The thing I love most about wedding photography are my clients. I feel so honored to be the one that photographs them and their families during one of the biggest celebrations of their lives.

What is the biggest challenge you face when shooting a wedding?
Photographing weddings brings on many challenges. I would have to say my biggest challenge is the elements, like rain or a hurricane. That being said, we always work through any conditions, have fun, and walk away with amazing photographs!
What should clients know about your style of photography?
My photography is fun with a sort of photojournalist style. I use my intuition to anticipate moments and using long lenses to stay out of the way. I like to shoot with a shallow depth of field and have colors blown out in the background with peoples’ eyes sharp in focus.

When you're not behind the camera, what do you like to do?
When I am not behind the camera I am playing with my two young children, either on the beach or in the woods. There is nothing better than a family bike ride to the Village Scoop.
What sorts of things inspire you when you pick up your camera?
I am truly inspired by peoples’ happiness and joy. Happiness brings out peoples’ inner beauty. I also get inspired by details—little things that you walk by every day and hardly notice.

Where will your business be in the next 5 years?
This past year I have officially become a destination wedding photographer, base out of York, Maine. I foresee more traveling with my clients. My clients love my style and they love working with me. When they travel with their family they want a photographer they can trust, that will be with them the entire time. That is where I shine.
