Taste of Maine

It's a typical boy-meets-girl story. On the first day of their junior year of high school, Nicole Decato met Ross DiMarco in homeroom. Nicole's family had recently relocated from Boston to Pittsburgh. "She sat right behind me and I was instantly attracted to her beauty and kindness," Ross says. Nicole admits, "It was love at first sight." The couple began dating, but broke up when they went off to college - Ross to the University of Michigan and Nicole to Carroll University in Cleveland. When their paths crossed again years later, it was undeniable: The spark was still there.

An engagement was in the air, and they both knew it, so Ross knew he had to be sneaky when it came to the proposal. "He knew I would be paying special attention this particular Christmas," Nicole says. That year, 2008, Nicole had asked Ross for a wool coat. When she opened the box and saw her coat she put it on immediately, because the heat in their house had broken that morning. When she put her hand in the pocket of her new jacket there was the ring box she had been hoping for. "I still think he rigged the heat so it would be cold enough for me to put the coat right on," Nicole says.

Nicole grew up in Boston and Pittsburgh and Ross grew up in Upper St. Clair, a Pittsburgh suburb, but there was only one place where Nicole wanted to get married: Maine. "It's the one place where I am always happiest," Nicole says. Nicole's mom is from Bangor and her dad is from Kennebunk, so she spent family holidays, summers, and vacations here. "I brought Ross to Maine once before the wedding to introduce him to the fabulous scenery, people, and cuisine," Nicole says. "That's when he fell in love with lobster rolls!"

When planning the reception from her home in Pittsburgh, Nicole did a lot of preliminary searching online for a venue. She took a tip from her cousin - a florist in the Kennebunk area - who mentioned that the Nonantum Resort was her favorite place to work with due to its beautiful location and fabulous staff. "That's all I needed to hear and I was sold," she says.

"We loved that it was on the water," Ross adds. "We felt like we could give our guests a good taste of what Maine is really like." That taste included Ross's beloved lobster rolls, which the couple served during the cocktail hour.

The wedding party took a trolley to and from the Nonatum to St. Martha's Church in Kennebunkport, where Nicole's grandparents were wed. The ride there got a bit emotional. "From where I was sitting on the trolley I could see all my closest girlfriends and soon-to-be sisters-in-law surrounded by the view of the beautiful Maine coast," Nicole says. "All of a sudden I realized that this was what I had always dreamed of and I burst into tears!" Luckily, photographer Nadra Edgerley from Nadra Photography was there to capture it all. "Aside from all of the amazing pictures she took, it was so much fun to have her and her husband at our wedding," Nicole says. "I hope she had as much fun with us as we did with her."

The couple promised each other to spend the entire day - from the altar through the reception - glued to each other's sides. "We had been to too many weddings where the bride and groom had spent so much time visiting with all their guests separately that they really felt that they were never together at the reception," Nicole says. "It was a good thing to be conscious about because it's easy to get caught up in the crowd."

Nicole and Ross also vowed to try to not leave the dance floor all night. The couple took special care in picking the music for the DJ to play. "We wanted a mix of music so everyone, young or old, could dance," Ross says. Their planning worked. "There was never a moment where the dance floor wasn't full," he says.
